Title: As They Were
Author: reverseorder
Summary: Meredith is broken again. (Meredith/Addison)
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Alludes to Superstition, but that's about it.
Word Count: 486

A/N: Prompts are love. Word counts are evil. The bulk of this story was rewritten four times, and it's still not right, but I can't agonise over it any longer!

There are still traces of her everywhere. A tube of lipstick, lying next to the bathroom basin. At first, Izzie had considered claiming it, but the death stare Meredith bestowed upon her when she reached for it quashed that idea quite thoroughly.

The scent of her perfume lingering on Meredith's Dartmouth t-shirt, borrowed after they were caught in a typical Seattle downpour one night, and subsequently worn for the next thirty-six hours on the laziest day Meredith could remember since her internship had begun. Well, perhaps lazy wasn't quite the word she was looking for. The shirt has been slung over a chair, exactly where it had been left that day, unwashed and unworn.

A canister of cocoa in the kitchen, for times when she'd thought they'd needed a bit of juju. Nobody really likes cocoa - though they'd drank it at the time to be polite - and so it remained on the counter, gathering dust.

So many tiny ways that Addison had insinuated herself into the house, into all of their lives, as Derek had done before her. If George and Izzie had a problem with it, they certainly hadn't spoken up. In fact, it had never been mentioned at all between them. Addison was there, and Meredith had been happy, in a quiet, self-assured way. Who were they to judge, or to complain? Addison caused them no sleepless nights, and their affection was carefully contained when they had company. Plus, thought Izzie, something about the two of them brought a happy, contented sort of vibe to the house.

Until one day it was gone, and Meredith was in the kitchen, glaring at the cocoa.

"Mer? Are you okay?"

She showed no sign of having heard.

"Mer?" Izzie waved her hand in front of her friend's face. "What are you doing?"

Meredith looked up slowly. "Thinking about cocoa."

Izzie raised her eyebrows. "Right. Is Addison around?"

And the shutters came down. "No."

"Oh, she's on call tonight?"

"No."

Izzie paused. "She's not staying over tonight?"

"No."

Another pause, slightly longer. "Okay."

"No, it's really not," Meredith mumbled.

"Huh?"

"I hate cocoa."

Izzie snorted. "I know. Me, too. And George - I think he hates it more than both of us combined."

"We should throw it away. Seriously," Meredith resolved.

"Uh, okay." Izzie waited for her to move, but Meredith simply continued to glare at the offending canister. Shrugging slightly, Izzie reached over-

"Wait!"

She drew her hand back in alarm. "What? Why?"

"Maybe we should leave it. You know, for when she comes back." Meredith's voice trembled slightly. Izzie studied her for a moment, then nodded.

"Alright."

It's been six weeks now, and the cocoa is still on the counter. The lipstick is still in the bathroom. The t-shirt is still on the chair. At the hospital, everyone knows that Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd has returned to New York, and to Mark Sloane.

But still, Meredith waits.

See? It's always so much easier to concrit (or just straight crit) yourself than others :P And now I feel like a total cow for concrit-ing you when you can't/won't concrit back!

Thanks for (a) reviewing and (b) making me giggle :D
